New York, November 13, 2018 – In an independent survey, 70 percent of consumers queried on their data privacy preferences said they would prefer to keep their data private on their mobile phones, if given the option.

The data-privacy-focused survey, conducted in October by Survey Monkey for Anagog, a pioneer of on-device artificial intelligence solutions, showed consumers are wary of ceding control of their private data, with 83 percent of respondents admitting they are concerned the mobile apps they downloaded automatically collect their personal data. In an era of very public data privacy breaches and dwindling consumer confidence, 77 percent of respondents stated that data privacy is very important to them.

“Consumers are increasingly knowledgeable about and suspicious of giving away their personally identifiable information to marketers and social media platforms, but the survey clearly shows they are willing to consider other options,” said Ofer Tziperman, CEO of Anagog. “More and more consumers are looking to corporations to protect their data, and many of these corporations are failing them.”

In fact, a resounding 95 percent of consumers participating in the survey said social media giants and other corporations should do more to protect consumer privacy. And more than 80 percent noted concern that corporations collect their mobile data and share it with third parties.

Overall security also factored into key concerns for survey respondents, with  82 percent of consumers stating they were very wary about sharing photos, posts and updates about their current location due to potential security risks.

The survey polled more than 200 respondents. Gathering data from a nearly equal amount of men and women aged 18 to 60+, the survey further revealed more than 80 percent of respondents feared their personal identifiable information (PII) will be hacked.

While governing bodies have stepped in to create compliance regulations, such as the European Union’s  General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), breaches continue to occur at an alarming rate. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, the first half of 2018 saw more than 22 million consumer records exposed.
